Luke Mitchell’s article, “Sick in the Head,” was published in Harper’s Magazine in February of 2009. Harper’s Magazine was founded in 1850 and it is the oldest general-interest monthly in the United States. Harpers.org gets about 150,000 visitors, and it has won many National Magazine Awards.  Democracy Now, an independent news program that has a viewership of 208,000 people, hosted the discussion with Luke Mitchell.
Audience and Agenda:
Democracy Now is unique because it receives neither corporate nor government funding. Democracy Now has received numerous awards for their journalism including: Pinnacle Award for American Women in Radio & Television, and the George Polk Award. The website attracts viewers with mostly liberal and independent views. The readers and followers of Harper’s Magazine reach a similar audience; many follow works like “The Nation” and “NPR.” These two forms of media are going to be much more likely to discuss single-payer insurance compared to a more conservative medium.

Usefulness:
According to the White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, “The President doesn’t believe that [single-payer] is the best way to achieve the goal of cutting costs and increasing access.” Washington is giving mixed signals on single-payer because recently President Obama said that there is “no idea is off the table.” President Obama invited John Conyer’s to the health care reform “summit” in Washington, after single-payer advocates protested their voice exclusion. John Conyers is the author of H.R. 676 and the bill currently has about 100 sponsors, but it sounds as if Obama is still scratching a single-payer idea. The irony lies in the fact that in 2003 Obama favored a single-payer system more than any other, saying that it is the best approach for health care reform in the United States. But even if Obama personally favors a single-payer system, there is definitely political pressure from insurance companies and politicians to avoid such a system.
