Dr. Torre addresses the flaws in Obama’s plan, and implies that the idea of Universal Health Care is much too lofty and impractical. Dr. Torre outlines a plan of what he feels should be done regarding reform, including the creation of an “A-team” of differing backgrounds to outline achievable goals.
Source Analysis:
The letter is primarily the opinion of Dr. Torres. He suggests creating a cooperative team of physicians, nurses, administrators, insurers and drug makers to figure out exactly what types of reform should take place. The idea itself seems to be a good one, but insurers and drug makers should not help pen legislation.
Usefulness:
Dr. Torres’ motives are questionable because he is Chief Executive of Caritas Christi Health Care, which is New England’s second-largest hospital network. He is respected in the medical community, but it is odd that he would suggest the participation of insurers and drug makers in new reform and legislation.
