In July of 2007 CNN invited Michael Moore onto their show to discuss his documentary “Sicko,” which addresses the U.S. health care system. Prior to the interview, Sanjay Gupta (CNN journalist, neurosurgeon, and Surgeon General nominee) gave his own report on Moore’s documentary. Gupta accused Moore of not telling the whole story, and claimed that Moore had “fudged facts” in his documentary. Following Gupta’s report, Moore was livid; he went on a rant regarding CNN, the war in Iraq, mainstream media bias, and the faulty reporting of Sanjay Gupta.
Audience and Agenda:
CNN is a news source that is owned by Time Warner and has a national voice that reaches an approximate 25.9 million homes in the U.S. The majority of viewers consist of white males who have a college education or higher. This particular CNN interview took place in July of 2007, but in the last few weeks Dr. Gupta has appeared in the national spotlight after being nominated by President Barack Obama for Surgeon General. The Hill, which is a congressional newspaper, published an article regarding Michigan Congressman John Conyers. The article discusses Conyers opposition of Dr. Gupta as a potential Surgeon General. The Hill is a Washington D.C. paper and has a readership of approximatley 1.1 million people. The Hill is an Institutional source supported mainly by various businesses. The title of the article regarding Conyers’ letter to Obama is entitled “Conyer’s opposition to Gupta is connected to Michael Moore.”
Usefulness:
Michael Moore’s documentary takes a long look at health care reform, and it loses credibility in the public when a journalist and neurosurgeon claims that Moore “fudged facts.” Even though Dr. Gupta attempted to discredit some of Moore’s facts, Gupta paid attention to tedious information that was separate from the main issue of health care. In Dr. Gupta’s journalistic career he has been accused of poor, incomplete, and inaccurate reporting. Despite the opposition of Congressman John Conyers, President Barack Obama has nominated Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General.
