In a “Perspective Roundtable” discussion on health care and the current economic recession, four panelists sat down to diagnose the situation and make predictions regarding the future. Jon Oberlander has published several articles regarding health care reform, and the correlations between the current health care climate and the last major attempt at reform in the early 1990’s. Meredith Rosenthal provides the view of an economist, which are generally a bit more conservative and promote open-market operations. James Mongan is CEO and President of Partners Healthcare System, which is a non-profit organization that owns several hospitals in Massacusettes. Medical Doctor, Thomas Lee, moderated the discussion.
Audience and Agenda:
The New England Journal of Medicine is a peer-reviewed medical journal that is published by the Massachusetts Medical Society; it was founded in 1812. The New England Journal of Medicine is one of the most popular and well-respected medical journals in the world. It’s website, ncjm.org, gets about 419,000 visitors, which consist of mainly of upper-class citizens who do not have children. It’s obvious that ncjm.org understands their audience because the information is zeroed in for those taking a heavy-interest in health care. The Massachusetts Medical Society is comprised of over 20,000 physicians and medical students that wish to pool reliable information together and spread it throughout the medical community.
Usefulness:
This timely video correlates perfectly with my should question. The discussion is largely based on the challenges of health care in the stifling economy and how one affects the other. Rosenthal points out that we have an unemployment rate of 7.2%, and as people get laid off, they will also lose their health insurance; this means that there will be more uninsured Americans, and more people pushing for reform. Oberlander adds that he believes reform will become a reality when middle-class Americans feel the pinch and begin joining the ranks of the uninsured. He also believes that the window for health care reform is open, and that this is the best opportunity for reform in the last twenty years. Due to the rising number of uninsured Americans, many feel that health care reform is inevitable, but Oberlander points out that the American people should “never underestimate the ability of the American Health Care System to avoid unavoidable decisions.”
