Title: Is This Health Care Reform Or Just Assistance To Health Corps?

Summary: A mysterious blogger analyzes a New York Times article entitled, “Health Care Industry in Talks to Shape Policy.” The blogger goes on to voice concerns about the Health Care Industry having such a strong voice in the health care agenda.

Topic: Should the Obama administration attempt to  convert the United States to a single-payer health care system?

The blogger “bmaz” posts his opinions on varying political issues on Emptywheel, which is a website where bloggers can publish. The first half of “bmaz”‘s article was quoting the recent New York Times article by Robert Pear, which described the “secret” meetings of health care Giants and their opinions on the best route for health-care coverage for every American. “Bmaz” goes on to say that he had a tough time identifying anything beneficial that can come out of the closed-door meetings that are occurring.

Audience and Agenda:

The website emptywheel.firedoglake.com has an average audience of around 9,000 people. Most of the visitors of emptywheel check out other sites around the blogosophere; such as rawstory.com, openleft.com, and mydd.com. The visitors of the website are people that are looking for alternative voices rather than the mainstream media. This specific blogger, “bmaz,” usually writes on a wide-range of politcal issues. He or she speaks in a conversational tone, so those who follow the postings of “bmaz” appreciate the interactive tone that is used.

Usefulness:

The blogger “bmaz” has an interesting way of delivering his or her information. This post has a collection of mis-spelled words, abbreviations, and obscene language; however, the post is effective because it presents a logical argument in a personal way. This blog post attacks the idea of closed-door meetings that have been occurring in Washington as of late. The idea of the giants of the insurance industry (Aetna, American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association, and America’s Health Insurance Plans) helping to reform health care behind closed doors is unnerving. It is also unnerving that the same giants that helped to shoot down the reform attempt in the 1990′s are participating in these closed-door meetings because their bottom-line is survival of their industry and not the health of the American people. I think Robert Pear put it best in his article: “It is not clear whether such back-room negotiations are still viable at a time when politicians are promising a new transparency and condemning the influence of lobbyists.”
